Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Like all anticoagulants, apixaban prevents clots by helping to thin your blood. However, this may increase your risk of bleeding. Apixaban may cause bleeding that may be potentially life threatening and requires immediate medical attention.
Other common side effects include: bleeding from your nose, bleeding from your gums, bleeding in your eyes, blood in the urine on laboratory testing, bruising and swelling, bleeding in your stomach or your bowel or dark/black blood stools.
Signs and symptoms of bleeding may include bruising or bleeding under the skin, tar-coloured stools, blood in urine, nose-bleed, dizziness, tiredness, paleness or weakness, sudden severe headache, coughing up blood or vomiting blood or materials that looks like coffee grounds. In case of a bleeding event which does not stop on its own, immediately seek medical attention.
Tell your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist about any side effects you experience, even if they are not listed in the patient information leaflet which comes with your medicine.
Please read the patient information leaflet for further information about your medicine including side effects.
