It is important to read the patient information leaflet provided with each pack of medicine. Remember to take apixaban regularly as instructed by your doctor, and do not miss a dose. Your doctor will decide how long you must continue treatment for.
Apixaban must always be taken twice a day. Try to take the tablets at the same time every day. This medicine should be swallowed with a drink of water. It can be taken with or without food.
To treat blood clots in the veins of your legs and blood clots in the blood vessels of your lungs: The recommended dose is two tablets of apixaban 5 mg twice a day for the first 7 days, for example, two in the morning and two in the evening. After 7 days the recommended dose is one tablet of apixaban 5 mg twice a day, for example, one in the morning and one in the evening.
For preventing blood clots from re-occurring following completion of 6 months of anticoagulant treatment for DVT and/or PE: The recommended dose is one tablet of apixaban 2.5 mg twice a day for example, one in the morning and one in the evening.
Whilst on this medicine, please inform your doctor or dentist that you are taking apixaban if you are having a surgical or dental procedure.
Make sure that you tell your doctor, pharmacist or dentist about any other medicines you are taking, including medicines you have bought yourself in the pharmacy without a prescription (e.g. aspirin) and any herbal remedies you may be taking (e.g. St. John’s Wort).
